HAVOK SURF WATCH
A waterproof digital watch for the surfer lifestyle.
CHALLENGE
Rip Curl asked LSD to provide directional design for a digital watch that could later become a tide watch. They were specifically seeking ideas and directions outside of their conventional thinking. In addition, Rip Curl requested a digital home screen face design.The goal was to create a bold, iconic sculptural expression of the tremendous underlying power, precision and sturdiness of the watch.
APPROACH
Lifestyledesign began the design process by conducting in-depth research into the highly competitive watch market, as well as current trends within the surfer community. The goal was to identify the end user and define a design path that optimized the technical capabilities of the watch and addressed user tastes and preferences. The research informed an iterative process of preliminary ideation, design exploration, and design refinement.
RESULTS
The Havoc surf watch blends comfort and durability with a unique full-wrap silicone strap, mineral crystal, and stainless steel bezel. The 3-hand analog dial is refined and straightforward and is supported by the background digital display which provides additional functions including dual time, date, stopwatch, alarm and back light. The analog/digital hybrid display allows you to turn the digital read-out on and off to simplify the look to just analog. .
